For an easier week...

Getting back into the swing of things here is not the easiest but good music makes it easier. Here is a new song from an old favourite. I think you will like it. - Sudhir

I Can't Quit - The Vaccines

Here's a track that has everything the perfect indie folk song needs - acoustic instruments, simple harmonies, lyrics about dreams and life simplicities and a music video with natural landscapes! Hope this track helps make your week easier.

Meetings and Music

Hey you,

Back again after a quiet hiatus. Was so much fun meeting you last week here in my new city. We should have taken a picture for the blog. Oh well, come visit again. :)

Here's a song by a band from Estonia. They have some pretty cool music and equally cool music videos. Like how the song starts with just the bass guitar and clapping as accompaniment. They seem to be quite well known in their corner of the world. Quite glad to have discovered them now. Enjoy.

Hope you have a fun month at home. :)

Good Man Down : Ewert and the Two Dragons

So great seeing you this week after what seems like an eternity. Unfortunately, this song is not in direct response to seeing you though. I have been on a Bon Jovi trip. This is one of my favourites. I especially like his acoustic cover of it. Jon Bon is actually quite a good singer. Hope you like it too.

Only the Wild Ones

Hey you,

The past week has flown by, and summer has arrived in Delhi. I can already feel my body start cooking towards a medium rare state. Will be nicely well done by May, meat falling off the bone by June. Haha!

Anyway, since you are indisposed this week, I will treat you to my two good finds. Both trio male bands. Have you heard of Dispatch? They aren't a new band, but I don't know any of their music. This track is from their upcoming album release. Quite an interesting mix of genres- some reggae for sure, a bit of stomp and holler half way through the song, and general indie folk rock stuff.

Platon Karataev is a band from Hungary. Great song, great lyrics, interesting accents, good harmony. Cool shots in their video too. :)

Hope you enjoy them!

Castles and Flying

Thought you would require a cool video and an upbeat song for this Monday. I think this is my perfect type of song. You will know why when you hear it.

I think you would like it to.

Castle on the Hill : Ed Sheeran

Hey,
Good song choice. Here's one that is my kinda song. Very indie vibes, good lyrics, happy/sad feel good type of video, and an exceptional voice.

'...These streets I'm walking, they start talking to me oh oh. Can't you see yeah yeah, there's only one way outta here. We have to face the things we fear, and we could be anyone we wanna be...'

It's going to be a good week. Hope yours is too! :)

The One Moment

So covers are one thing but when you are able to cover a song to the extent that it sounds like an exceptional new song, then you have talent. Just...listen. Miss you.

-Sudhir

Billie Jean : The Civil Wars

I couldn't wait to share this song on the blog for this week, and was quite amused when you sent me the same song yesterday to listen to. No surprises, it really is that awesome (except for the exploding guitars) :(
OK Go have always made some exceptionally creative music videos. Sometimes, I forget to concentrate on the actual song because the video is so distracting. So today I listened to a bunch of their music without the video, and loved the music too (good lyrics too!)
Glad the music helps cope with your stressful week.

Clouds or the Trees

Hey Sudhir,
Saturday night, and I am packing for a project trip to the Himalayas. This song happened to come up on the playlist I was listening to- pretty apt. It's such a simple message- get out there and make each day count! :)

Take to the sky
Open up your eyes and see how far you get in just one day
Take to the sea
And open up your heart and see how far you get atop this place

Just One Day : Mighty Oaks

Hey hey!

Nope, this is not a remake of a Bollywood song. Hope you are having fun on your trip. I think I have found a song for you this week which is equally meaningful. Plus, I know you like the mild folksy songs. Surprisingly, this song (towards the middle) sounds very much like a Mumford and Sons song.

Song in my Head

Hey,

Stumbled on this interesting song today. Such a quirky band. Despite the silly costumes, the colour and face paints in the music video, it's a pretty deep and serious song - talking about problems of starting anew, changing from an old self to a better self, yet clinging on to the dreamer that you are and still finding fulfillment in life... I think this is what it means, but I could be completely wrong. :P

Anyway, I've got this song in my head and it won't go.

Have a good week. :)

Spirits : The Strumbellas

Bow wow!

I am not sure if you know of my love for strong solo female artists - Ingrid Michaelson, Regina Spektor, Etc. This is one of my favourites. It is made so much better by the solo piano playing throughout. I am not sure what it means. Not sure there was wonderbread during biblical times. I will leave that up to you to decide.

Happy special week to you!

Stomp and Holler

Apparently that is a genre of music. And apparently "Indie" is way too broad a genre. Stomp and Holler includes Alabama Shakes, The Magnetic Zeros, Iron and Wine and Bon Iver and the likes.

Came across this song this evening in a frantic attempt to find a song to share. Remember the song 'Ho Hey'? It was so long ago and then after a couple more singles, this band went off the radar. Well they are back and it seems like they've been working on a new album. Stomp and Holler-- couldn't find a proper definition of the genre. Maybe it's literally stomping and hollering that make up the song and subsequently making the listener tap their feet and holler along. Quite fun I think :)

- Tanisha

I was playing this song for a friend when she said, "I wish all men sounded like this!" The uniqueness of this sound (both music and vocals) is what draws you to it. It reminds me of the same feeling I get when I listen to Hozier. Must be on the lookout for more like this, except hopefully with some less ominous titles that could serve as a rough start to a week. :P Enjoy though.

Time and Lemons

Sudhir's Pick

Hey yo!

This is my win for the month. Not only do I get to share a cover of one of my favourite songs but it is performed by one of the top 15 performing voices right now. Also, have you heard of Chilli Gonzalvez before? Listen to more of his stuff. He popped up on my Spotify last year and I literally couldn't stop listening to his stuff. Very soothing. Anyways, Enjoy!

Tanisha's Pick

Hi, I spent the whole afternoon trying to find a song. Listened to so many good choices, but I guess they just weren't quite right for this week. I also thought that because you are still recovering from fever, you may not have posted yet and would buy me some extra time, but was pleasantly surprised that you've already written out your post.

Here's a song I heard recently. It's such a happy warm tune by an Australian trio. I read that they only started singing together a few years ago to raise money for a mission trip to Africa. When they started busking in Sydney, they got noticed and then they were offered an opportunity to record their music.

Hope you like the song and hope you recover soon too!

Rainy Day Tunes

Hellos!
Such a cold and gloomy day! My colleague and I at work couldn't even type because our fingers were getting numb, so we had to thaw them around the coffee cup.
Played this song in the afternoon and it definitely spread some warmth by making us move to the beat. After the fifth time, she was like, "you're playing the same song again!?" :P
Never heard of this group, so should check out other stuff by them. I think this would make a good track for a beach playlist; it has a bit of a calypso vibe.
Enjoy it and have a good week.

Hey hey!
So, much like you (and I am sure everyone else in Bangalore today) I was stuck in the rain for a bit. While I was getting shelter under a tree, I thought back to last week when I heard a song in Joe's place. Since it is his birthday, I don't mind talking about him a bit. Typical Joe didn't know what the song was called but he knew the name of the band - Deer Tick. I spent the day listening to several of their songs but couldn't find the song that Joe was playing. However, what I found was a new band which I genuinely like. They are very folksy and rough hazy vocals like a Bob Dylan or Bob Geldof. Perfect for rainy nights like this. This is my favourite discovery from today. Enjoy!

Musical Interlude: November Edition

Meg Burrows is a singer/songwriter from Suffolk, England who writes songs from her parent's kitchen. I've knows Meg for over 16 years and over the years I've seen her become an extremely talented writer, poet and musician. Memories go back to playing piano duets during lunchtimes in a music room at school when we were 12 years old. Since those days, she's become a local singing sensation writing her own lyrics and composing her own music performing at events from cafes, to weddings, to music festivals.

When I asked her to contribute to the blog, she sent me a list of more than 15 songs saying they were all exceptional music and impossible to choose from them. After much effort, she managed to choose 3 and said it was impossible to narrow it down any further as music is so abundantly amazing!

Thanks for contributing such beautiful music. You can contribute some more in the future. Hope we meet sometime soon to sit and talk about music all day.

-Tanisha

Please check out her page on Soundcloud, Facebook and YouTube for some of her music.

Breathe/Winter : Matt Corby

It's very fitting for this time of the year. His vocals are hauntingly beautiful. Love listening to him on road trips. His song 'Brother' is cracking.

Ghost of You : Seth Lakeman

I saw this man again the other night and found his music on the album, Kitty Jay (brilliant song!). He's so so good live; so much energy, skill and passion. Ghost of You is just beautiful.

Letters : Marty O'Reilly and the Old School Orchestra

Live music doesn't get much better!

Some Indie for October

Hey yo!
By now I feel like you know my music tastes well enough that I do not need to explain why I like this song. But in the interest of record- keeping and because a few people actually read this every week, I thought I would elaborate. 'Feels Like the End' literally has everything I like in a song - brilliant lyrics (which make me question my sanity), deep powerful voice and that beautiful beautiful piano taking a lead. Bring on the long reflective times on the balcony!
-Sudhir

Hey,
I'm not sure that you listen to enough folk music, so here's one that is as folk-y as you can get. A banjo taking the lead harmony, lyrics that take you back reminiscing childhood days and home, and a gradual crescendo of tempo towards the end of the song are all components that make it a great track. They toured with Mumford and Sons and Ben Howard, so you can definitely see the line of influence. Have a good week.
