One More For Good Measure

Sudhir's choices:
I heard this song twice in the past two days in two movies. I figured it must have been a way for the universe to get it onto our blog. I really liked this slowed down version. I think you will too. Also, the movie is pretty good too. I would recommend it.

Take On Me (Unplugged) : Aha

One of my favourite Indian singer/ songwriters. I think you will like it. Hope you enjoy it!

Betther Than It All : Raghav Meattle

Tanisha's choice:
I watched the movie "Stranger than Fiction" the other day and I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would when I started it. Feel good, thought provoking in its simplicity, and such a good cast!
Anyway, in the movie this song by Wreckless Eric is performed. Yesterday I listened to Cage the Elephant's newest live album and they do a very good cover of the song.

Human Lightening

Hey,
I've been feeling very blah this weekend- the kind of blah before you become ill, or when you are recovering from illness. So I stayed in bed most of the day and watched silly romantic comedies! Aside from feeling kinda better now, I also found this cool song from one of the movie soundtracks. The lyrics are a bit depressing, but the music is great. I'm sure you'll like it.
Have a good Monday! :)

Lightening Tent : Wildlife

Are you feeling better because of the romantic comedies? That would be a fascinating power that romcoms could have. Also, I am experiencing a solidarity sickness of a running nose and cough. Oh well... Since we are talking about discovery of new music. I heard this choice wile driving down to Brighton this weekend. I think you will like it.

BTW, I think I win. :)

Let Me In

Sudhir's Pick:
Since you are already so confident that you are going to win this week, I shouldn't even try right?! Nope, I really think you will like this. This has been on repeat all morning. Super catchy and does all the right things musically. Enjoy!

Let Me In : Grouplove

Hey you,
I was super excited to find this band-- an indie Indian duo. Love the simplicity of the track- the young love story line, the funky musical arrangement, and the music video. I asked you the other day about your thoughts on Wes Anderson because I think their music video has lots of Anderson elements- the colours, the random compilation of objects, camera angles, etc. I visited the National Gallery of Modern Art today, so I'm feeling very artsy. Going well with this song choice!

They only have three tracks out, and I am waiting to see more of their talents and variety in music styles that they produce.
I liked these lyrics from their track- Philosophize.
"I've got a New York state of mind, In Indian standard time... Sometimes it just don't seem to fit"
P.S I like your choice. Catchy for sure. :)

I Love You Baby, and I Love You Doll : Parekh and Singh

Happy Milestone! :)

So I know I sent you a song of Matthew Perryman Jones the other day so I thought I would send another one. Oscar season is here and his song is used for the trailer of Manchester by the Sea. And on further listening, I stumbled on this beauty. He sounds a bit like Bono don't you think? Hope you enjoy it!

Looking for You : Matther Perryman Jones

Hey hey,

Great music finds! I'm super excited about the Oscars- especially waiting to watch Manchester by the Sea.
So- I know we rarely listen to popular music, but you know, it's not all that bad. This band has recently risen to fame in the UK and they're kinda cool! This one is from their older album. What's not to love about the video! This is what good music should do to people; to want to jump and dance around without bothering what you look like! :)
-Tanisha

P.S. I can't believe you are going to watch Hamilton. Like, I honestly don't think I have ever been this jealous of someone. It will take some time for me to turn this jealousy into happiness for you. Gah!

Monday Musicals

Hey,

I know the Tony's don't come with the same anticipation and excitement that the Oscars come with, but I do love musicals! I've never watched the Tony awards beginning to end, but NPH has brought some pizzazz to the show with his exceptional opening acts and this year James Corden put up quite a show too.

I had heard of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton, but it was only recently that I started reading about the show. An amalgamation of Americal history and hip-hop could only result in a musical masterpiece.

Was listening to the soundtrack today- sooo much awesome-ness!

Sudhir- let's watch this sometime please.

Alexander Hamilton : Hamilton (Original Broadway Cast Recording)

Hey hey!

So I was thinking of sending you something from Avenue Q which is one of my favourite contemporary musicals but I figured that I would try to be a little unique. This song is from Chicago which is still one of my favourite musicals of all times. The Twist is that this is an all male performance of Cell Block Tango. Hope you like it.

Also, listen to the Avenue Q soundtack if you haven't. It is great. I know where it is playing in London. Will happily take you any time.

Monday Panic!

Hey,

I told you I was watching the movie The Man from U.N.C.L.E the other day. It was quite enjoyable with its 60s crime and deadpan humour. I loved the soundtrack. It did so much for the movie. The song I picked was featured in the trailer. I might have sent you this song by Laura Mvula a couple years ago.

This is what director Guy Ritchie said about her and I couldn't agree more. "It's not easy to find a new song which matches the power of the classic Nina Simone and Roberta Flack pieces in the film. Laura Mvula has done it with 'You Work for Me'"

You Work for Me : Laura Mvula

Yo!
Don't judge me. But I am actually a big fan of Panic at the Disco. They have an allure that I cannot explain. Their new stuff is exceptional. While heavy on the rock they still play very well to my teenage alt-rock days.

While 'This is Gospel' (The Piano Version) and 'Hallelujah' are my favourites. I am sharing this song because it is just that  - sharable. Enjoy!

Call the Police

Hey hey!

I love our Oscar traditions - waking up early, continuous texting whichever hemisphere we are in and of course, the frantic tallying at the end to see who predicted more winners. I know awards season isn't for a while but since we started watching potential Oscar movies already (The Walk) might as well share a song from a recent Oscar flick. Oddly enough, I only recently heard it. I think Legend is better on this than 'Glory' which he won the award for. Anyways, I hope you enjoy it. Looking forward to February 2016.

I know I sent this to you a couple weeks ago, but this needs to be heard by more people. Everyone knows that Clemens Rehbein (a.k.a Milky Chance) is a talented singer, but who are all these other talented musician friends of his!? Way too much talent for one music video. I listened to some of the music by the other singer in the video. Most of his music is in German, but really good stuff. I definitely think he sounds very much like George Ezra. Also, Roxanne is such a good song choice to cover. Have a good week.

So Now What?

Tanisha's Pick

If you want a fun song to wake you up on a lazy afternoon, this is the one you need.
Complete with lots of clapping and sing-a-long type lyrics, it's a guaranteed foot tapping song. The Score's usual genre is lovey-dovey and this song is just like the rest. I'm pretty sure this infectious melody will stick in your head all week.

We're a thousand miles up and about to get higher...

Following the release of this single, was their equally praise-worthy track Catching Fire. Keep a lookout for their EP releasing sometime this year.

Sudhir's Pick

A friend of mine told me a while ago that if you didn't like The Shins you are crazy. They are a band for Everyone. I took his advice and tried them out an shave been hooked ever since. I was super excited when one of their songs was used to close out the penultimate season of how I met your mother. This song provides the constant rhythm and beautiful sounds to entice you into a journey yet you are constantly brought back to reality through the re-asking of the title -So Now What?

Indie all the way

Sudhir's Pick

"Walk away and we'll start a war"

For this week I would like to introduce you to The National. There is really no good comparison (in my opinion) for what these guys sound like. The deep voice of the lead singer adds depth to the soulful lyrics and peaceful melodies. If you have the time also check out their song 'Fake Empire'.

Tanisha's Pick

Here's another one from my iPod. This was on the soundtrack of a Katie Holmes/Josh Duhamel movie that wasn't really a movie worth watching. But the soundtrack was unexpectedly quite brilliant. Very minimalist selection of indie songs. Some of the tracks, like this one and some of the ones by The Bird and the Bee had quite an eerie feel to them.

And the Oscar goes to...

It's that time of the year again; the glitz and glamour on the red carpet, those 45 second speeches, the long list of nominees hoping for that golden statue and of course, Neil Patrick Harris! :D We love everything about the Oscars.

Tanisha's Pick
I didn't come close to finishing the long list of movies to watch this year in time for the ceremony. I did, however watch the movie Begin Again that has an Oscar nomination for 'Best Original Song' for the track Lost Stars sung by Adam Levine.

I totally loved the movie. I've already watched it twice and listened to the soundtrack on repeat the whole week I worked on my portfolio. My favourite song from the movie is definitely A Step You Can't Take Back.

Ignore the average vocals of Keira Knightly and focus on the production of the song that Mark Ruffalo's character puts together in his drunkenness and depression. Pretty brilliant I think.

Sudhir's Pick
While we both love the Oscars equally, Tanisha and I differ in approaches. I stay as far away from all the Oscar-nominated movies until the winners are announced. I do this mainly to prove the political scientist in me correct by predicting the winners based on what is in the press. I do pretty well most years guessing more than 85% correctly each year.

My favourite song of the Oscar season wasn't nominated, unfortunately. Hero by Family of the Year from Boyhood perfectly defines what it means to be in your early 20s. The lyrics while being incredibly simple bleed with raw emotions.

"And we can whisper things
Secrets from my American dreams
Baby needs some protection
But I'm a kid like everyone else"

The country- feel for the song, aided by a strong video makes this one of my top finds from last year.

But this is a competition, after all so I am throwing my support behind 'Glory' from Selma to win the award. Let's see how it goes.
