Battle of the Schools

So I am going super old school for you this week. This blog is about new music meaning new music for you even if it might be 52 years old. Still upbeat and wonderful like I hope this week will be for everyone.

Enjoy!

Come a Little Bit Closer : Jay and the Americans

I usually don't find music with rap that I like. This was an exception. Pay attention to the lyrics and that trumpet bringing in a bit of a jazz twist. Regardless of whether you listen to it once or twenty times, hope you enjoy some element of it's beauty. :)

'I wish people would stop yelling and start listening...'

Also, listen to his other music. You'll like.

Birds : Chef'Special

Full Moon Nights

This week, our good friend Joe has transported us a few decades into the past with two classics. Out at sea presently, his music choices reflect the brilliance of his surroundings and fond memories of home. Thanks a lot for sharing these great tracks.
Looking forward to seeing you when you're back.
:)

Dear Tanisha and Sudhir,
Sending this to you from 15 S 060 E in the Indian Ocean. These are my 2 choices whilst I think of home and miss you guys.
I'm sure hope you'll enjoy them as much as I do.
Much love,
Joe Perez

The 1st time I listened to this song was when I got my LP player and set it up. All I had were 3 records and one of them was the album American Beauty. I remember placing the stylus onto the record and immediately the speakers rang out the soulful intro to  "Box of Rain" by The Grateful Dead. There was no turning back from then on. I must have listened to the entire album end to end at least 20 times.

Box of Rain : Grateful Dead

Tonight's a full moon, and out at sea I wait for nights like this to and just soak it all in. Made me start humming frank Sinatra's Fly Me to the Moon which then made me think about home and especially Miss. Susan Pereira who is also very fond of this song and we dance to it often.

Take Yours, I'll Take Mine

Hey you,
In celebration of a pretty fun filled weekend, I decided to share two songs that I listened to last week. This song just seemed so familiar when I heard it, I was almost singing along. It must be from some movie or an ad. I know you're not the biggest fan of folk (and with the banjo, this is super folk-y), but you might like this one.

Take Yours, I'll Take Mine : Matthew Mole

I almost got a bit teary eyed with this song by Frances. I was torn about which song I wanted to share of hers- but have chosen a live acoustic one, because it was on repeat all day.
Enjoy your trip this week.
- Tanisha

Set Sail : Frances

Hey hey!

Not sure if you have heard this before or not. But it is definitely worth a share.
I think I have mentioned that Death Cab for a Cutie's Plans is one of my favourite albums of all time - definitely in the top 3 most complete albums. They are back to perfection with this song. I can't believe I haven't heard it until now. Hope you like it.

- Sudhir

Black Sun : Death Cab for Cutie

This King Charles

This is the most unique sound I have heard. I haven't been left this excited and awestruck since I first heard Mika. There are several reasons why I like King Charles-
1) Unique sound but has slight elements which remind them of touring partners - Mumford and Sounds
2) He is from the London gang which does exceptional alternative music and
3) Beautiful thought-provoking lyrics. He has won awards for it. Listen to Love Lust

He will rise to the top of your frequently-played list soon. I promise.

Ivory Road : King Charles

Hey,
Absolutely love this King Charles guy. Been listening ever since you introduced me to him last week. I'm adding number 4 to your list- his hair!

Sharing a very mellow track from a band I came across recently. Fairly new group with just a few songs to their name. But it's so beautifully constructed- minimal guitar and vocals but such moving lyrics.

Have a good week. :)

Swim : Cape Cub

The Five Year Crush

Hi,

Not sure if I mentioned but May 1st (in 2011) is the day I graduated from Concordia. It's been five years since I switched my tassel and flipped my ring. So in honour of that I am playing a classic for you which I am not sure if you have heard before or not. The lyrics don't have much to do with nostalgia but David Bowie constantly screaming five years seemed apt for my current state of nostalgia. Enjoy!

Five Years : David Bowie

Hey,
I chose a different song to share, but then this came up in the YouTube suggestions. Quite a nice collaboration, I think. I shared a Yuna song in the first post on this blog. Although her style has become a bit more mainstream compared to her older music, her voice is so perfect and classy.
